How do I get a copyright?

On Behalf of | Jun 23, 2021 | Copyright Law

If you have a creative work, such as a song or a book, you will want to protect it. You do not want someone else to use your work as his or her own. Establishing ownership is incredibly important with such things to protect your interests.

The best way to do that is through securing a copyright. Luckily, the process is not difficult.

Automatic copyright

The U.S. Copyright Office explains a copyright on your work is automatic once you put it into a fixed form. You do not have to publish it to gain the protection. Once you write the book or the song, it is your unique work and nobody else can claim it or use it as theirs. It is essential to understand you must put it into a tangible form because copyright will not protect ideas.

Registered rights

You can register your copyright, but it is not mandatory. Registration provides you with additional protection and rights. Once you register it, you can file a lawsuit for infringement when someone tries to claim your work. It also creates a legal record of ownership.

You can register your work with the U.S. Copyright Office. There are fees for doing so, and you do have to provide personal details and information about your piece. The office must approve your copyright registration. You should try to register within five years of the creation to get full protection.

A copyright is essential to protect your creative work. It is an automatic process, but registering it can provide you with even more protection.
